Things You Don’t Know About Myrtle Beach (Probably)

In our never ending quest to keep you entertained and expand your mind we combed the internet for the best information we could find about Myrtle Beach.  Actually we just went to The City of Myrtle Beach’s site and used the information that they worked hard to compile.  Big thanks to the City of Myrtle Beach for these little nuggets of information about Myrtle Beach and be sure to check out their site for even more factoids about Myrtle Beach.

Did you know:

That we have several endangered or threatened animal species along the Grand Strand?  Endangered bird species locally include the Ipswich sparrow, least tern and Wilson’s plover.  The loggerhead turtle is considered a threatened species, while the eastern brown pelican and island glass lizard are listed as species of special concern.  All of these animals nest or winter in our sand dunes and beach grasses, which is another reason why it’s illegal for anyone to disturb or damage either the dunes or sea grass.

That the northern portion of the new oceanfront boardwalk, from the 14th Avenue Pier to Plyler Park, is named “Gloria’s Way,” in honor of Gloria Lindsay Sapp, a longtime teacher, hotelier, volunteer, businesswoman and civic leader?  Bronze plaques will be installed at either end of this boardwalk section to recognize Gloria Sapp, an ardent supporter of the boardwalk project, who died in 2010 at age 84.

That a time capsule to be opened December 18, 2054, is buried at Nance Plaza on the southwest corner of Kings Highway and Ninth Avenue North?  A granite monument and brass book mark where the capsule was buried in 2004.  Elementary school students throughout Horry County participated in the project, and their hopes and dreams are contained within the capsule.

That the runway at Myrtle Beach International Airport is 9,503 feet long?  That’s nearly 1.8 miles of runway!  MYR is the second-busiest airport in the state, passenger-wise, behind only Charleston.  You can fly direct to 27 destinations from Myrtle Beach International Airport.

If you did know all of these then give yourself a big pat on the back and make sure to tell everyone you know that you rock at your knowledge of Myrtle Beach. We give you permission to be a little extra cocky today.

“An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.”

Political Tourists Gear Up For Myrtle Beach Republican Debate

The Myrtle Beach area is expecting an influx of tourists for the 2012 Republican Debate which will be held on Monday, January 16th at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.   This is an excellent opportunity for families to come to Myrtle Beach and teach their kids about politics and all that is involved in election process in our country.  The Myrtle Beach Republican Debate also coincides with the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Festival which starts on the 14th and wraps up with a parade on the morning of the 16th.

Martin Luther King Festival organizer Bennie Swans said all candidates would be invited to deliver a three-minute address on why they believe in the legacy of King, participate in every part of the festival and ride in the parade. So far, the feedback from candidates, both political parties and local business leaders has been tremendous, said organizer Swans.

“No one, regardless of party, can deny there’s a need for economic growth and development,” Swans said. “And I believe we can lead that in Myrtle Beach for the entire state.”  For more information on the Martin Luther King Jr. Festival call Bennie Swans at 843-251-2061.

Myrtle Beach Bingo

Who’s ready for some bingo? For some Myrtle Beach bingo is one of the hottest tickets in town. With no shortage of places to play and chances to win some really big prizes Myrtle Beach keeps bingo lovers happy.

Bingo Etiquette:

No two places have the exact same rules or operating procedures so make sure you read over the posted rules before your session begins. Most bingo halls have regular players who may lay claim to a lucky seat. If you are new and someone politely asks you to move or scoot over don’t take it personally, just accommodate them. Maybe some of their good luck will rub off on you. Always make double sure you actually have bingo before calling it out. Players will get frustrated if the game is stopped and you don’t really have bingo. Be respectful of non-smokers and smoke only in designated areas. Bring a photo ID with you in case you hit a big jackpot. Feel free to ask questions of the operators or those working at the bingo hall, they are there to make sure you have a good time.

Now that you have the rules of etiquette down here’s a list of bingo halls in Myrtle Beach:

North Myrtle Beach Bingo- Located on Hwy. 9 in North Myrtle Beach
Big Bucks Bingo- Dick Pond Road Myrtle Beach 843-215-3484
Bonus Time Bingo- 1101 Spring Ave. Myrtle Beach 843-233-9309

Myrtle Beach in January

The winter months in Myrtle Beach still offers tourists a plethora of activities and for a lot of visitors it’s one of the best times to visit the Grand Strand.  Most of the attractions will be open, but the hours may be shorter than during peak season so if there’s something in particular your’e wanting to do call ahead to verify what hours they are open.  The crowds are much lower in January, as are the temperatures.  Keep a jacket or windbreaker handy, especially for walking on the beach. Even though the temps are cooler it’s usually almost always sunny with clear skies and you’ll find that people are still able to enjoy outdoor activities.  If a weather front comes through, you may have a rainy day, but in January that’s not so likely.  With average air temps of 56 degrees during the month of January there are still plenty of opportunities for fishing, golfing, shopping or just shell hunting on the beach.

Give us a call or visit or bargains and specials page for some great deals on Myrtle Beach Vacation Rentals.
