Robert Edge Sr. Parkway - Main Street Connector

The opening ceremony and dedication of the new Robert Edge Parkway is set for September 3rd at 10 a.m. The highway project in North Myrtle Beach, known as the Main Street Connector, has been named by SCDOT as the “Robert Edge Sr. Parkway.”

The opening ceremony and dedication will be held on top of the bridge over the Waterway at 10 am on September 3rd.

Robert Edge, Sr. was the first mayor of North Myrtle Beach and one of the pioneers and first settlers in the North Myrtle Beach area. He served as the first mayor of North Myrtle Beach from the city’s incorporation in 1968 until 1974 and was mayor of Crescent Beach before the merger of four small towns to create North Myrtle Beach. Mayor Edge passed away in 2002 and was the patriarch of one of the most influential families of Horry County and North Myrtle Beach. Beginning with Mayor Edge’s service and continuing with sons Robert, Jr. and Tracy, the Edge family has held elective office for 6 consecutive decades from the 1950’s until today.

Mayor Edge served in a “strong mayor” form of government and provided leadership and vision required to consolidate 4 towns into what is today North Myrtle Beach. His efforts were critical in establishing a modern police force, establishing and expanding water and sewer service, recreational programs, and positioning North Myrtle Beach as a major area of political influence. He was also a founder of the modern day Republican Party in Horry County.

Mayor Edge is survived by his wife, Nettie Edge, three sons and one daughter. The youngest son, Tracy Edge, has served on the North Myrtle Beach City Council and in the South Carolina House of Representatives since 1994.

Representative Edge worked with state agencies and Horry County Council to initiate the project, secure funding and complete its construction.

The Parkway was initiated by Representative Tracy Edge in the late 1990’s as a vital link to expand the city westward across the Intra-coastal waterway.

The project has taken 85 million dollars and nearly 5 years to complete.

Oceanfront, Main Street Horseshoe, McLean Park -- North Myrtle Beach, SC.

This race features a 700 yard open water swim, a 13 mile bike leg, and a 5K run. The course will include over 6 miles of beautiful Ocean Boulevard, a ride along the marsh in Cherry Grove, and a section of historic Ocean Drive the “Home of Beach Music” on Main Street. Bring your family & friends and make it a vacation event!

This is a great opportunity for your family and friends to share in your sporting passion. While you satisfy your “need for speed” at the race, those closest to you can also enjoy the prime vacation destination that “is” North Myrtle Beach. Arriving the day before the race so you can look over the course is highly recommended. At registration you will be issued your event shirt, “goodie bag” with sponsorship products, swim cap, and timing chip & number. The race will start at the transition point at the Main Street Horseshoe beach access. At this point you will set up your bike and transition station. The area will be manned by volunteers until the end of the race. The finish line is back at McLean Park so during your cool-down make your way back to the transition area and pick-up your bike and equipment. Helmets are required. There will be a bike mechanic on site but remember, don’t expect any major repairs to be done on the day of the race. Make appointments the day before, or at your local shop for maintenance of this type. The Ocean Drive Resort adjoins the transition area.

6th Annual Irish Italian International Festival

The City of North Myrtle Beach and the NMB Aquatic and Fitness Center will be hosting the 6th annual Irish Italian International Festival on Saturday, September 26, 2009. The one day rain or shine event brings approximately 20,000 to celebrate different cultures. The event will take place from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm on Main Street in North Myrtle Beach. The festival will feature great food, live music, arts, crafts and dance groups all surrounding an Irish Italian International theme. There will be a restaurant competition for best entree, best decoration, and best dessert with the announcement of winners at the event and through the media.
ADMISSION IS FREE.

The proceeds from the festival are donated to the North Myrtle Beach Friends of the Library

Pedestrian Safety in North Myrtle Beach

Pedestrian Safety Tips:

I'd like to start of with saying if you are driving a car, please watch for pedestrians. I had a very close encounter over the weekend with my son. The driver had a car full of people, on cell phone and was speeding. Ocean Blvd. has a ton of people trying to cross over to get to that beautiful Atlantic Ocean give them a chance. Also, look out for mopeds, bicyclists & golf carts. Remember take you time. Ruining your life or or the life of someone else is so not worth it!

Cross the street only at intersections. Do not jaywalk.

Use marked crosswalks where available.

Do not cross in the middle of the street or between parked cars. Drivers are not expecting pedestrians to cross mid-block and you are more likely to be hit if you do this.

Make eye contact with drivers when crossing busy streets and continue to watch out for traffic the entire time you are in the crosswalk. Your life may depend on it, regardless of whether or not you have the right-of-way.

Remember, don't take those "NO RIGHT TURN ON RED" signs for granted. Always check for turning vehicles before stepping off the curb - motorists make mistakes too.

Avoid walking in traffic where there are no sidewalks or crosswalks. If you have to walk on a road that does not have sidewalks, walk facing traffic.

Stop at the curb and look left, right, and left again before you step into the street. Be sure to evaluate the distance and speed of oncoming traffic before you step out into the street to ensure that a vehicle has adequate distance in which to stop safely.

At intersections, scan over your shoulder for turning vehicles. Make eye contact with the driver of a stopped car while crossing in front or in back of it -- making sure that the driver knows you are there. This is also important for cars that might be backing out of driveways.

Wear bright colors or reflective clothing if you are walking near traffic at night. Carry a flashlight when walking in the dark.

Use extra caution when crossing multiple-lane, higher speed streets.

Always look for signs that a car is about to move (rear lights, exhaust smoke, sound of motor, wheels turning), and never walk behind a vehicle that is backing up.

Children should not cross streets by themselves or be allowed to play or walk near traffic. Kids are small, unpredictable, and cannot judge vehicle distances and speeds.

Always hold your child's hand. Never allow a child under 10 to cross the street alone.

In foul weather (rain or snow), allow extra time and distance for a vehicle to stop. Do not let umbrellas or jacket hoods block your view of approaching traffic.

If your view of approaching traffic is blocked by something, move to where you can see (e.g., outside edge of a parked car), stop and look left-right-left again.

Never run or dash into the street.

Watch out for entrances to parking lots. Sidewalks often cross driveways and entrances to parking lots. Always check to see if a car is entering or exiting the parking lot.

If the intersection has a pedestrian signal, press the button and wait for the pedestrian signal to display the "WALK" indicator. The "WALK" signal indicates that it is safe for a pedestrian facing the signal to proceed across the roadway in that direction. Continue to be alert for traffic at all times, however, while in the roadway and always check for turning vehicles.

A flashing "DON'T WALK" signal means that a pedestrian should not start to cross the roadway in the direction of the indicator, once the "DON'T WALK" sign begins to flash. This indicates that there is probably not enough time left in the cycle for you to cross the street safely. However, any pedestrian who has partially completed their crossing should finish crossing the street or proceed to a safety island in the same direction in which they were headed.

A steadily illuminated "DON'T WALK" indicator means it is not safe for a pedestrian to enter the roadway in the direction of the indication. Pedestrians waiting to cross should wait for the next "WALK" signal in order to cross the street safely.

Ocean Safety Along The Grand Strand!

Always check with on-duty lifeguards about the ocean conditions before going into the water. Never get into the ocean when lifeguards are not on duty. Always swim where a lifeguard can see you. Lifeguards are on duty from 9am - 5pm daily during the season. That's plenty of time to get your beach fun in!

Please be aware that ocean conditions may change quickly along the coastline. When in doubt don’t go out! Here is a list of a few things that can occur in ocean when swimming or playing in the ocean.

Rip Currents are powerful, channeled currents of water flowing away from shore. They typically extend from the shoreline, through the surf zone, and past the line of breaking waves. Rip currents can occur at any beach with breaking waves or where a there is a stream or outflow into the surfline. The majority of ocean rescues made by lifeguards are due to victims struggling in rip currents.

Sleeper Wave is a wave that is larger than the average wave height that has been observed. These can be unpredictable waves, which may occur even on days when most of the surf looks small. These large waves have been the cause of too many drownings over the years and can catch those close to the shoreline by surprise, washing them into turbulent water. Most victims are playing near or in the surf or shore fishing.

In an emergency -- call 9-1-1
If you see someone in trouble, get help from a lifeguard. If a lifeguard is not available, have someone call 9-1-1. Always remain calm. Have someone spot the person in trouble or keep your eyes on the person. Throw the rip current victim something that floats and yell instructions on how to escape by having the victim swim out of the rip current, in a direction following the shoreline. When out of the current, direct them to swim towards shore.

Only professionally trained rescuers should attempt in-water rescues!

Whenever possible, swim at a lifeguard-protected beach.

Never swim alone - take a buddy with you.

Learn how to swim in the surf. It's not the same as swimming in a pool or lake.

Be cautious at all times, especially when swimming at unguarded beaches. If in doubt, don’t go out.

Stay Sober - don't swim while intoxicated. Alcohol can affect your judgement and your body temperature - impairing your ability to swim.

Obey all instructions and orders from lifeguards. Lifeguards are trained to identify potential hazards. Ask a lifeguard about the conditions before entering the water. This is part of their job.

Stay at least 100 feet away from piers and jetties. Permanent rip currents often exist along side these structures.

Due to dangerous currents, never swim in the inlets.

Consider using polarized sunglasses when at the beach. They will help you to spot signatures of rip currents by cutting down glare and reflected sunlight off the ocean’s surface.

Children should swim only with adult supervision.

Don't swim during rough seas. Broken necks and paralysis have resulted from swimmers being thrown into the ocean bottom headfirst.

Do not swim near surfers - surfboard fins can cut you.

Getting to the Myrtle Beach Area:

By Train

Florence and Dillon are the two closest places Amtrak serves. You'll have to get someone to pick you up or rent a car with advance notice to get to Myrtle Beach.

By Bus

You should be able to get to Myrtle Beach on a Greyhound bus from just about any point in the United States. You'll find it easier during the summer when more buses are scheduled.

By Air

The major area airport is Myrtle Beach International (MYR). It is served by the following airlines: Delta, Continental, Northwest, Spirit, and U.S. Air. Direct flights may be difficult to find depending on the season, but flying to a major hub such as Atlanta then taking a short hop to the area should not be a problem.

Grand Strand Regional Airport is actually the closest airport to North Myrtle Beach, and serves mostly chartered or private flights.

By Vehicle

From Interstate 95, the easiest way to town would be to take the exit for Hwy. 9 in Dillon, SC and continue south towards Myrtle Beach. Hwy. 9 will then merge with Hwy. 17, so just continue south on Hwy. 17 for the rest of the ride. Vehicle travel will become easier once the direct connection from SC Hwy. 31 (Carolina Bays Parkway) via the Main Street Connector (North Myrtle Beach Connector)

Getting Around Myrtle Beach & North Myrtle Beach is pretty easy. Just don't get confused between the two cities. The street numbers are exactly the same!!!

Ocean Boulevard and Kings Highway Highway 17 Business run north and south along the Grand Strand parallel to the Atlantic Ocean. We also have Highway 17 Bypass in the Grand Strand's westernmost route running parallel to the ocean. The Bypass begins in Murrells Inlet and continues northward until it merges with Kings Highway just before the Restaurant Row.

The 28-mile Veterans Highway (S.C. 22), a four-lane road that links U.S. 501 west of Conway and U.S. 17 north of Myrtle Beach.

The Carolina Bays Parkway (S.C. 31) is a six-lane scenic highway from S.C. 9 to US 501 near Myrtle Beach Raceway.

The Robert M. Grissom Parkway is a four-lane route from 62nd Avenue North in Myrtle Beach to Harrelson Boulevard near the Myrtle Beach International Airport.

Don't forget if you are driving and have never been to the area pay attention! I see so many people in serious accidents or fender benders while on vacation. We have a lot of traffic in the summer months so just keep your eyes open so you can continue to enjoy your vacation!
